Macross Frontier gets a new PR in 2023

Bushiroad continues to spread the love for decade old sets this year! Earlier this year they released premium boosters to update King of Fighters (2010). That’s well and good, but with the upcoming release of Macross Shooting Insight, a space shooter published by Bushiroad including characters from the entire Macross series, Bushiroad has finally done me right by packing in a single Macross promo card with Shooting Insight.

Before we talk about what this card could be, let’s talk about all the things that have happened since the last Macross Frontier card hit in 2011:

  • Macross FB7 came out in 2013, a Macross 7 and Frontier crossover, with no pack in promo.
  • Macross Delta came out in 2016, with no new sets, promos, or anything.
  • Macross Delta, Passionate Walkure hit in 2018. Again, nothing.
  • Macross Frontier: Labyrinth of Time and Macross Delta: Zettai Live!!!!!! Hit theaters in 2021 and BluRay in 2022. Yet more nothing.
  • May’N (Sheryl’s singing voice) released four studio albums.
  • Action Kamen from Crayon Shin-Chan got banned and then unbanned.
  • Uta Macross, a rhythm Gatcha game was released in 2017 and discontinued five years later.
  • At least one hundred other Weiss Schwarz Sets came out.
  • Wild Wild Weiss started.
  • Future Card BuddyFight died.
  • ChaOS died.
  • Pope Benedict the XVI abdicated, the first to do so in six hundred years, then died.
  • Emperor Akihito became the first Emperor of Japan to abdicate in two hundred years.
  • The Queen died.
  • The United Kingdom left the European Union.
  • Obama was re-elected president of the United States.
  • Trump was elected President of the United States.
  • Biden was elected President of the United States.
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs won a playoff series for the first time since 2004.
  • The Chicago Cubs won a World Series for the first time in 107 years, ending the longest championship drought in professional sports.
  • Elon Musk got hair implants.
  • Cher had two more going away tours.
  • Disney churned out five feature length Star Wars films.
  • I graduated university, twice.
  • I dated my wife for 11 years.

That’s wild, but what’s the Weiss card?

I asked my guy who might know such things, but he had no idea. Alas, all that we’re left with speculation. However, given some facts about the game, we can probably narrow it down a bit. The game is a shooter that covers all the whole Macross series[1] with piloting the Valkyrie fighter mechs forming the main gameplay loop. My guess is that the promo will be either a pilot or a Valkyrie. If it’s going to be coded MF, chances are it will be Alto or a VF-25. The idols do feature prominently in the key artwork, so we can’t rule out Sheryl[2] or Ranka either.

There are several useful one-off cards that could do Macross F a world of good. Macross’s level 0 game has a lot of big zeros and a salvage brainstorm, but no guaranteed plussing zeros. Any sort of Riki would be greatly appreciated. At level three, a good on play effect for Alto, Trianglar to double dip, such as on play heal or burn would also be appreciated. The set also has a surprisingly decent number of options to build walls at level one and two, so a standby trigger would go a long way.

Weirder possibilities abound. The game is set aboard Battle 7, the Macross ship protecting the Macross 7 fleet. Gamlin Kizaki, the Diamond Force Ace, appears to be the first playable character. A Macross 7 promo isn’t out of the question. I’d be happy with a Nekki Basara promo (as would the Master of the FireBombBar in Osaka) or a Gamlin one, but not as happy as I would be with a Sheryl promo. Much of the Japanese bonus edition material has a heavy focus on characters from “Do You Remember Love?,” so maybe we get a Misa or Hikaru card?

If we don’t get it, it’s Kevin’s fault

This is where my Keeluah fueled hopium goes into overdrive. Bushiroad is publishing Shooting Insight. We have a Macross set in the past. There remains one more premium booster announced but unrevealed. The other card game Macross was part of, Crusdae, is long gone. There is a chance we finally get the second Macross F set I’ve wanted for over a decade. Although, part of me is hoping that if it’s not a Macross F character, that we might get something more.

Did you just write almost 800 words of copium over a single promo?

Yes, but I’m here to play waifu. Nothing else in Weiss compares to the praxis of playing Macross in Weiss.

You can import the Japanese version on amazon.jp or purchase the International version on your console’s e-store.

[1] The Japanese editions come with pack in DLC for Do You Remember Love. At this point it’s not clear whether the DLC will come to the English version of the game. The Macross license for international release is rather particular in that sense. I’m pessimistic, since Minmay features prominently in the art for the Japanese version but is absent from the international version’s art.
